10 Story Prompts to Get You Started on the Road to Storyland!

Writing Prompt from Pinterest

As writers, we’ve all been there – the swirling blank page of nothingness, a reflection of that which (does not!) reside in our minds. Even the most gifted of writers need to take the time to exercise the muscle that is our brain so that we can get past that pesky blockade.

One way we might do this, is through story prompts. So here, I’ve done the scrounging for you and given you a list of ten (hopefully appealing) prompts to get your writing fingers flowing across that page (or keyboard)!

If you find any of them useful, I’d love to know which ones in the comments. Feel free to suggest your own down there too! There’s nothing better than a supportive writing community after all.

NOTE: I’ve also linked in the pages where I found the prompts so you can take a look for others, if these don’t peak your interest.

  1. A hacker discovers that the new iPhone can be remotely detonated. Many corrupt political leaders are assassinated in this way on the same day.
  2. Your main character and her husband awake one night in the early hours of the morning, both recalling a horrific dream from the night before. They soon learn the dream to be true as they discover a fresh, painful brand in between each of their shoulder blades.
  3. Choose a major historical event. Write from the perspective of a witness.
  4. Your character wakes up one day, and everything they say rhymes. They can’t control it.
  5. Your main character suffers a terrible concussion. After recovering, they cannot control the vivid nightmares about the accident. However, they can also take images from their mind and project them into the real world. Doctors think they are crazy and keep them heavily sedated.
  6. Although superheroes existed to protect and serve, they are now hunted and killed on sight.
  7. Santa Clause is real – but he isn’t quite what’s been depicted in the old songs and stories…
  8. “If you do that again, I’ll throw you out that f—g window…what-what are you doing?” “Just checking to see how far the drop is to see if it’s worth it.”
  9. “S–t we’re gonna die!” “Now, now, I don’t wanna hear that negative attitude. Look on the brightside!” “Yay, we’re gonna die! Woo hoo!”
  10. She’s like glass – break her and you’re the one who’s bleeding.
